He was married to Janet Ross of which two children Dorcia Michele McElroy whom has preceded him in death and Robert McElroy Sr. (Diane) were born. Then he was married to Ronie Mae Carter McElroy for 38 years who preceded him in death 11-26-93 and to that union six children were born John Louis McElroy III, Harvey Alvin McElroy, Steve Allen McElroy (Sharon), Linda Darlene McElroy, Jackson (Eddie Sr.) Apostle Darryl McElroy (Renee), Laura Mae McElroy.
He is survived by his wife Sharon Rose McElroy of 14 years and their four children Terry, Cliff, Sandy, and Kim Hayes. Three sister’s Polly Caudle, Cara Harrell, Anna Sue Jones, and one brother Apostel Jerry McElroy of Joilet, IL. Dad leaves many to cherish his memories 25 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 8 great, great grand kids.
John worked at Inland Steel Mill in East Chicago, IN for over 25 years. He was a brick layer by trade. He returned to Providence after retirement and began to build his own home brick by brick. He found joy and relaxation by helping out at the cook outs at Sureway. One of his biggest pleasures was blessing the town with homemade waffles and banana pudding. His kind heart’s purpose was to advance the kingdom of God by being a giver. He loved God, People, and chicken in that order. He shall always be respected as an Awesome father to many. He will be missed but never forgotten because he left one thing in all of us. “Has Anybody Told Ya that They Love You Today well let me whip it on ya Love Ya, Love Ya, Love Ya.” Dad’s influence and the Help of God he led many to Christ. He led by example he walked the walk and not talked the talk. Dad worked many 16 hours shifts and usually had side (brick laying) jobs to provide for his family but it never kept him from taking us to church at least three times a week and if he couldn’t take us he made us walk. We had Bible Class at home, we prayed while being disciplined. He would say, “If I didn’t love you I wouldn’t do it.” I would say “you don’t have to Love me”. He would say, “I’m going to Love you the most.” Due to his military training he constantly reinforced, repeated, and drilled his teachings and preaching’s in us.
Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014 at New Life Christian Worship Center in Providence. Visitation will be from noon until service time.
